Shhh! Hair Care Secrets

Doesn't it always seem like the pro's have the key to the vault of hair care secrets? Down or up your beautiful head of hair is by far, your best accessory. With all the information available online about ingredients and products, it can be overwhelming and expensive. You want long healthy hair so you have to do this, and avoid that, or this will happen...blah blah blah!
Here are some solutions to get the look that you just might be missing or avoiding, because of your healthy hair journey obsession.

  • For best results healthy hair is key....Well yeah, or fake it till you make it! Even color will help you achieve that goal. Correct out growth and dry ends with a true professional color treatment. Permanent, demi, semi and glazing options are available to seal and smooth damaged hair. When colored by a stylist you are guaranteed superior results for the look you are after faster and healthier. *FYI home dye is very damaging because it is fool proof, to make it "what you see, is what you get" there are very high amounts of unnecessary harsh ingredients your hair would rather avoid.
  • To much or not enough? If you like to wear your hair as natural as possible that's fine but you need to protect it with something. Creams, Lightweight sprays, dry or wet oils, and silicone's are all great options. Get the look and not the damage that no protection against the sun, pollution and elements bring. To much can be just as damaging to your hair's integrity too. Avoid adding or layering more products then you need. Less is more even for curly hair styles. Try lotions and potions that do it all, so you can take the guess work out of cocktailing your products, and what effect they have together when mixed. Refresh with water and that potion diluted to perk up your look or second day hair when needed and keep it clean.
  • Get professional protein and moisturizing treatment at the salon at least every other month. The level and variety of conditioning treatments are far more intensive when given by your stylist. What they have available you cant buy. Home and salon care needs to be both going on if you have damaged hair that you are trying to grow out long! It should be a working plan in motion.

End of Summer Blues!

All good things must come to an end, and Summer is one of them. So, on to the next hair care regime all us hair gals go. If you have been a sun bathing beauty, or a swimming machine, you should do a little hair maintenance to get ready for the winters round of punishment.
  • Go to your stylist and get a TRIM. You need to get off the dead ends from sun/chlorine damage.
  • Do a clarifying shampoo treatment. I recommend Redken Hair Cleansing Cream it is the BEST hands down!
  • Pour distilled vinegar on your hair from the scalp down completely saturating your hair. This is a wonderful way to get your hair back to it's natural PH from the clarifying shampoo.
  • Now deep condition. Towel dry hair and then evenly distribute SDBSF's Moroccan Hair Mask, use an over sized amount, you want your hair to be soaking in moisture. Comb through, and bag up your hair with a shower cap. Use heat for 15-20 minutes with a hooded dryer, heated hair cap bonnet or simply roll up a wet towel and microwave it and do the wrap.

Doing a monthly deep conditioning treatment is a great idea for keeping you hair healthy and strong.

  • Want to shine? Oil weekly! Apply SDBSF's "My Mojo" hair oil at night comb through and if you must wash out in the morning.

Happy hair is shinny!

Is Mineral oil just OK for your hair? Or do you seek GREAT when it comes to your lushious locks?

There are three basic classes of refined mineral oils:
Paraffinic oils, based on n-alkanes
Naphthenic oils, based on cycloalkanes
Aromatic oils, based on aromatic hydrocarbons
(Not to be confused with essential oils)

I think in moderation and regulation, there is nothing wrong with mineral oil, in the right time and product.
I do know it is less expensive by far, and more cost effective, than fruit based oils. So with that being said is it quality over quanity?
Is it like Target vs. Nordstrom?
I think so, but this is my opinion, and it is based on my thoughts and education with it only.
Let me put it this way, when giving a relaxer, a level 10+ on the pH scale what is the barrier cream? Mineral/ petroleum oil!Why because it is a cheap, thick barrier that blocks penetration better than any other base.
So when it comes to the your crown and glory will you opt to upgrade?

Condition Your Tresses

To some degree most women style their hair daily. Whether it's simply a blow-dry or a complex ritual, considering, too, environmental stress, your hair takes a lot of abuse.

Restore Your Crowning Glory
Recipes that will improve the scalp while conditioning your hair.
  • For conditioning dry, brittle, damaged hair, try mashing a ripe, large banana. Add a 1/2 of cup of coconut milk with a tablespoon of honey. Blend untill smooth. Apply to dry hair from roots to the ends, cover with a shower cap, and then wrap your head with a warm towel. Allow to remain on your hair for as long as possible- up to an hour. Rinse thoroughly with warm water, then shampoo and condition as usual.
  • Use Jojoba oil to enhance the gloss of normal or dry hair. Actually a plant wax not an oil, closely resembles human sebum. It makes a superb scalp and hair conditioner. Giving your scalp a good massage to stimulate circulation and encourage hair growth. Use this treatment weekly.
  • Rinse, rinse, rinse. If silky smooth hair is your aim, proper rinsing is crucial. Even the BEST conditioners will leave your hair drab ans dull if not completely rinsed out.
  • Make some TRESSONAISE- Smooth your mane with this homemade hair-healthy conditioner. Break 1 whole egg into a bowl. Mix 1 1/2 tablespoons lemon juice and 1 cup of olive, avocado or sesame oil. BLEND until nice and thick. Apply to dry hair, enough to cover damaged parts. Stay clear of scalp if your hair is oily. only treat lower portion. Cover with shower cap, then wrap with a warm towel. Let penetrate then remove with shampoo and follow with your usual conditioner.

Pucker Up!

Natural tips for luscious lips, organically...

Lip care shouldn't be a comlex chore. It should be simple , naural, and basic.
As we all know by now when venturing out into the sun, be it the lake or snow, don't forget to use lip balm that has a SPF of 15 or greater.

Try natural tried -and-true ingredients to lessen the drying effect of mass produced gloss, to get that glossy look of them Try natural moisturizing treatments instead:

Castor oil (natural gloss er)
Coca butter ( moisturizer)
Honey (natural humectant)
Vitamin E
Wheat Germ Oil
Vegetable Glycerin

Drink lots of water to hydrate yourself throughout the day. Lips are the first to go when dehydrated.

After brushing your teeth, gently brush the lips. It will take away chapping, and temporarily plump up the lips giving a pouty look.

Bless you,

Caring for Curly, Coily, Kinky or Biracial Children's Hair Naturally

General maintenance and some
mastering hair care tips

Authored by: SDBSF stylist Mindy Lindner

It is important to a little developing self-image to have a positive view of them self, including their hair. Natural hair is beautiful and I always encourage embracing it! So no matter what type of hair you have, you can learn how to manage it and eliminate damage if you know what you are doing and are armed with the right product tools. By following some simple tips and product recommendations, taking care of your child’s hair can be a pain free and pleasant experience for you both.

Step 1:Washing This has to be one of the most dreaded experiences for children with textured hair. The first thing you should do is decided if you need to use shampoo or can get the hair clean with a cleansing conditioner (you will need to clarify if you have a swimmer). There are a lot of options for getting "fresh hair” with out harsh soap. Sweat and sebum are both sterile; leaving it in your hair too long is what attracts unwanted bacteria. Our Favorite way to cleanse is The Purifying Rinse cleansing conditioner. Conditioner rinsing is an awesome way to get the hair clean with out using harsh stripping detergents found in shampoos. What you will need to do:
Wet your hair thoroughly. Put The Purifying Rinse cleansing conditioner in your hand. Starting at your temple use your finger tips to gently massage product through your scalp. Then do a milking motion on down the length of your hair. Smooth the conditioner through your hair with out tangling it up, while creating friction. Leaving it on long enough to penetrate, then rinse out all of the way.

Step 2:Conditioning Re-condition fresh hair with our daily instant moisturizing conditioner CoCoCream Rinse, or if you need a heavier product you can use our insanely popular Moroccan Hair Mask daily too. Apply selected product generously to hair root from tip and comb through ensuring even saturation. Let set a few minutes or put a shower cap on for the duration of the shower for ultimate penetration. This is an important step for long hair, curls, or blow fried hair to have the much-needed extra moisture.

Step 3: Detangling If you did a comb out with conditioner in the hair as directed above this step should be pain free.Always detangle hair dampened, never dry. Spray on Vanilla Float detangler all over towel dried hair. Use a wide tooth comb to divide the hair into sections. Detangle small sections of hair instead of the whole head at once it will be so much faster. Remember to be gentle there is a head attached. Start at the tips of the hair and work toward the roots. Be sure to hold the root firmly to lessen pulling pain. When you get a section detangled, moisturize, moisturize, and moisturize! Use cream products instead of holding gels, mousse, and hair spray such as our Absolute Lush, Whipped Amazon Fruit Butter, or Shiny Hair Dress, braid it so that it doesn’t get re-tangled.
Helpful tools and products to avoid comb-out tears:

Snag less metal-Free/Ouchless ponytail holders
Wide tooth comb or pick and Rat tail comb for straight parts
Natural boar bristle brush for smoothing down ponies
Moisturizing Conditioner (CoCo Cream Rinse)
Clarifying Conditioner (for heavy duty washes The Purifying Rinse)
Hydrating shampoo (If you decide to use shampoo use sls free such as our Moisture Wash)
Daily Moisturizer for comb outs (Vanilla Float Leave in moisturizer/detangler)
Natural oils (My Mojo)Creamy hair moisturizer/ stylers (Whipped Amazon fruit Butter Or Absolute Lush healthy hair butter)

Help eliminate damage and always use wide tooth comb and natural brushes.

Step 4: Styling Your Daughter's Hair should be a pleasure and not a chore, for either of you. When you find styles that work with her hair, it is easier to style and more enjoyable for your both. How you style your child’s hair will depend on how old they are and what activities the are involved in. When she starts to take interest in how she looks you might consider asking her for input in how she wants to wear her hair. Below are some fun helpful suggestions for styling

Braids and Cornrows Are pretty and the smaller the sections the longer the style will last! Braiding tiny braids may take longer but they again they last. My daughter’s favorite was pigtails with a ton of tiny braids. I remember getting up to 20 swinging ponies on each side. Natural braids offer an endless amount of styling possibilities. If you don’t know how to cornrow try scalp twists with a little gel. Be creative and consider letting her wear a braid out when it is time to take the braids down. Next to braids cornrows are a natural home stylist’s essential. They can be combined with braids, twists, or Bantu knots. You can cornrow the front of her hair and pull back the rest into a moisturizing bun. If you cornrow your child’s hair small the style can last a week or more.
Twist can be done large or small. If your daughter likes to wear her hair down this is a nice way to keep it under control around her face and then braid a few big sections with moisturizer in the back to be let out the next morning when dry. Use your imagination!
Afros and Puffs, I think every little girl should be able to wear her hair completely out and loose or in a puff at least once in a while. It reaffirms the fact that her hair is beautiful and can be left alone to look good too.
Bantu Knots are another fun ethnic style. They are a great hair stretcher that naturally loosening the curl. She can wear them up for a while and then take them down for a controlled wave pattern that is beautiful down.

Biracial Children’s Hair-

I have biracial children, so I sympathize with other mothers of biracial children because I know what they go through. I have clients with mixed children, friends who are mixed, as well as family members who are mixed or have mixed children. Whether you are a black or white mother I know that hair issues can be hard and sometimes a daunting experience. The tips above should be helpful. Although I am a hair stylist this is all do-able for home hair care. Together we will master a hair regime that will be fast and effective, just like a pro.

Healthy Hair RULES!

Make the commitment your mission, longer, stronger tresses. Anything in life worth having takes time so be patient, long hair is socially powerful. It projects a wonderful image that says you are feminine, sensual and spiritual you go girl.
Growing with grace, making sure you keep a clean sharp look. Trimming ends on an AS NEEDED basis works well if growing long hair. Remember that you are paying for more than a trim, it is the tool your stylist is using and the skill that they have so do your homework.
When combing out long hair always start from the bottom and work your way up.For emergency detangling use "My Mojo" oil and a wide tooth comb to release snarls and give comb ability.
avaliable at http://www.bodysofine.biz/
Use gentle hair accessories! Do not contribute to more havoc on your gorgeous hair with dated metal ponytail bands. Toss them out and opt for ouch less METAL FREE hair bands plus they give a sleeker look when wearing a ponytail.
Braid long hair at night to avoid matting and tangles.Replace implements often. Old combs and brushes can scratch the hairs cuticle causing unnecessary snags that lead to breakage... to avoid this replace synthetic combs every 3 months or so.
I rinse my hair twice a week with our The Purifying Rinse (before the cleaning it is a good idea to give your long hair a pre shampoo treatment with our butters). On alternating days if a freshen up is needed i simply re-condition my long hair. Always condition wet hair. It is a good idea to double condition long hair; this added step will help with tangles and give extra moisture leaving you with silky, smooth, soft hair. Recommended non shampoo and conditioner:
The Purifying Rinse cleansing conditioner
CoCocream Rinse instant daily conditioner

Health is #1 for growing good hair. You can maximize your growth cycles by eating healthy, drinking plenty of water, exercise and taking the proper blend of vitamins.
Weekly hot oil treatments are a must for long mature hair! I indulge in this 100% saturating my hair in our "My Mojo"oil or butters then simply washing it out and re-moisturizing with CoCocream Rinse Leave conditioner in your hair over night in a moisturizing bun for maximum moisture. Practice this 1-4 times a month for beautiful sexy hair that everyone will notice!

Things to Avoid

Things to Avoid

What you put in your body is just as important as what you put on your body! Skin is the largest organ on your body and absorbes everything that touches it. It accounts for 16% of body weight too FYI. You would never intentionally put toxins in your body, so why put them on your skin.
Below is a list of toxins that are in a lot of our everyday products.

Formaldehyde - used as a preservative and disinfectant, it is a suspected carcinogen often found in shampoos, nail polish, nail hardeners, and hair growth products. Look for wording like hydantoins and surfactants (such as sodium lauryl sulfate), which may contain formaldehyde even when it's not listed on the label. Other names: Formalin, MDM.
Coal tar colors - listed as FD&C and D&C colors, coal tar is a common ingredient in cosmetics, hair dyes and dandruff shampoos. They have been found to cause cancer as well as other health problems ranging from asthma attacks to headaches.
Lead - found in some hair dyes, especially those that work gradually. Lead is a known carcinogen and hormone disruptor that can be readily absorbed through the skin and can accumulate in the bones. A study done at Xavier University of Louisiana, found that a number of everyday brands of hair dyes that contain up to 10x's the amount of lead allowed in household paint. Yikes!
Parabens - Are preservatives used to extend the shelf life and a possible carcinogen. All of SDBSF's products are paraben free.
Petroleum and or Mineral Oil - Are sythetic oils and can not penetrait or be absorbed. By locking moisture against the skin, petroleum and mineral oil suffocate skin by sitting on the skin’s surface it can potentially block pores and block out needed moisture. Also may cause pimples because the skin cannot properly breathe.
Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLS) or Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulfate (SLES)- is a detergent and surfactant found in many personal care products. It is an inexpensive and very effective foaming agent. It can cause skin irritations for people with extremely sensitive skin. Everyone should visit http://www.safecosmetics.org/ for an extensive list of ingredients to avoid.
*FYI We signed the compact for safe cosmentics.

Skin Delicious Body So Fine products
“Over time, I have learned that beauty products involving the purest of ingredients really work best to moisturize the hair and skin,” Lindner says. “We strive to provide the finest quality products from all around the world for us and for you.”
She’s not only concerned about what goes into the products. All packaging is 100 percent recyclable. To reduce breakage or spilling during shipment, each bag is filled with biodegradable filler made of vegetable starch.
In addition to its emphasis on fine ingredients, Lindner says her company has a cultural focus. Skin Delicious Body So Fine is a supporter of fair trade, and uses ingredients produced using environmentally sustainable production processes. All ingredients are purchased directly from farming communities and/or partnerships with fair trade suppliers throughout the world to help indigenous people maintain their economic independence and cultural survival.
“We celebrate ecological and cultural diversity,” Lindner says.

Simple Summer Hair Tips authored by SDBSF stylist Mindy Lindner
1.Use products that contain SPF protection or high levels of shea butter, a natural sun shield.

2.Oil and wet your hair before swimming. Wet hair absorbs less salt or chlorine.

3.After swimming, use a clarifying shampoo. Chlorine can dry out hair if not washed out.

4.Leave conditioner in longer than usual. If possible, sleep with it in overnight.

5.Avoid washing your hair too often. Your can rinse away product build up with a double conditioning rinse in place of shampoo for a fresh head of hair.

6.Limit your use of hot tools. Air dry, when possible.

7.Deep condition your hair on a weekly basis. Purchase a hooded dryer or cordless micro cap at your local beauty supply store. You will need some disposable plastic shower caps, and spend 15 plus minutes a week under the dryer. Rotate between hot-oil and deep conditioning treatments.

8. Keep up on your trims getting the dead ends off is a must for healthy looking hair.

9.Seal the deal with a clear coat deep conditioning treatment every 4-6 weeks to lock in moisture and add brillant sheen to your lavish locks.

10. Drink lots of water and take a hair and skin care vitamin.
